Want to keep your pipes from freezing? Want to know your best bet? Ensure your house stays above freezing point. Can’t make that happen? Then follow these five steps to avoid future repairs. We offer many services including fixing clogged pipes and leaky faucets.

At A Better Plumber and Sewer Company, serving Round LakeIL, we present how to keep your pipes from freezing over at night.

1. Keep the Heat Turned On

Ensure your heat does not go beyond 50°F. It should, however, be low enough to keep your pipes from freezing. No one stays at home all the time, even with COVID. You can maintain this temperature when you are at home. But when you leave, you need to make sure someone is able to maintain said temperature.

2. Drip, Drip, Dripping Away

Helping a pipe relieve pressure when you know it will freeze is a no-no. Know what you should do? Let it drip. When the faucet does this slowly, it will melt away the ice safely. You could use a lit candle or turn the heat up. But never water through by turning it on – the pressure with which the water will come out exploding could cause damage.

Drip, drip, dripping away is your way through.

3. Keep the Flow of Heat Going Indoors

Keep your house super-warm so that all the pipes everywhere remain warm, too. The temperature will ensure your pipes do not freeze overnight. If there are any blocked vents, perhaps some busted coils, make sure you fix them so that heat can flow evenly through your house. You have to keep all ventilation systems up and running, too, for a more even flow of heat.

4. Seal All the Cracks and All the Holes

Winters mean soups and coffee. They mean those delightful evenings with you cocooned in your blanket, your favorite book in your hand.

They also mean drafts – hmph!

You need to seal all the cracks and all the holes, make sure there is no draft. With doors and windows that may have spaces in the corners, you can use caulk or foamy sprays that keep the cold, wintery winds out. Let the pros do this for you – your measures may not last. So, call us in, and we will do the necessary.

5. Heating Tape Is Under-Utilized

Think of heating tape as an electric blanket used for pipes. It will supply heat directly to keep all cold away. Those short sections of pipes exposed to cold winds – outside pipes, for example – could use something like heating tape.

All set to ensuring your pipes remain hot? In case of anything unseemly, though, reach out to A Better Plumber and Sewer Company, serving Round LakeIL. Let us jump in and do your plumbing and sewage.
